Rocky Flats is not likely
to win any popularity contests, but one of it's subcontractors just
might.
Vanessa Morganti,
president of Future Solutions, Inc., has been providing the former
nuclear site with recycled products intended to meet federal guidelines
and decontaminate the site by 2006.
In 1993, after an executive order mandated federal agencies to make
environmentally correct purchases, Morganti began researching the
potential markets for environmental products and services.
Three years later, while servicing accounts at Rocky Flats for Laser
Concepts toner cartridge of Broomfield, she seized the opportunity to
begin her own business.
"It was a matter of realizing what [Rocky Flat's] needs were,"
Morganti said. " I realized they wanted to buy recycled, and that they
had a need to buy recycled."
Future Solutions now offers recycled products to a number of federal
agencies, including the Department of Energy.
But Future Solutions is not limited to helping government agencies and
its contractors. Morganti says that 20 percent of her business now
derives from the private sector and from environmentally conscious
consumers not restricted by government mandates. Her products have
been made available through her Web site at www.futuresolutionscinc.com.
She fills orders ranging from products made of old money to robotic
vacuum cleaners and annual sales are expected to exceed $225,000 this
year.
Diversifying the practice has become one of the businesses primary
focuses.
"I'd like to see a more pro-active effort geared toward prime
contractors and corporations to assist them in their buy recycled
program," she said. "And I'd like to see the effort go national."
